How goliath names work in 5e
A goliath carries three names at once: a birth name from the parents, an honorific nickname assigned by the clan, and the clan name itself. The honorific is the live one. It describes a notable deed or trait, names like Skywatcher, Twice-Orphaned, or Bearkiller, and the clan can revoke or replace it when a goliath's deeds change. Goliaths take these nicknames seriously and answer to them before anything else, because among goliaths you are what you have most recently done.
Stone syllables and ledger names
Goliath birth names land hard and flat, built from compact syllables that survive being shouted across a mountain pass: Aukan, Keothi, Vaunea. Clan names stretch longer, like Anakalathai or Elanithino, and roll off the tongue in a way the birth names deliberately do not. The honorifics are plain words in Common, which is the point. The tribe wants everyone, goliath or outsider, to hear exactly what you did. The generator above mixes all three layers in proper order.
Playing the earned name
The honorific is a scoreboard, and that makes it the best roleplay tool on this page. Decide what deed earned your goliath their current nickname, then decide whether they think they still deserve it. A barbarian called Laststand who fled one battle has a wound no sword made. Goliath culture also drops the weak from its ledgers, so an exile may carry an honorific the clan no longer acknowledges. Roll until you find a nickname that asks a question.
Names and the fair-play code
Goliath culture keeps score honestly. Competition is sacred, cheating is the deepest shame, and the naming system enforces both, since an honorific won unfairly poisons the whole ledger. That gives any goliath character a clean moral compass: they will correct people who inflate their deeds, including party members. Few things establish a culture faster than a barbarian who refuses an undeserved compliment.
