How dragonborn names work in 5e

Dragonborn put the clan first, always. In formal settings a dragonborn introduces themselves clan name first, personal name second, because the clan matters more than the individual in draconic culture. The personal name comes from parents at hatching, and close friends often shorten it into a nickname that would never be used in front of strangers. When you roll names above, you get the personal name plus a clan name, which covers both halves of the convention.

    The sound of draconic names

Draconic names crunch. They stack hard consonants like K, R, Sh, and Th into short, punchy personal names like Ghesh, Kriv, or Sora, and the clan names run longer and prouder. Canon clan names in the Player's Handbook can run to seventeen letters, which is fun on paper and miserable at the table, so the clan names in this generator are capped at a length a DM can actually say twice in one session. If a result feels too smooth for your taste, swap a soft consonant for a K and it will sound draconic again.

    Tips for your dragonborn character

A dragonborn's relationship with their clan is the fastest shortcut to a backstory. Were they raised inside the clan and carry its name with pride? Exiled, and the clan name is now a wound? A wanderer who earned adoption into a new clan? Roll a few clan names above and pick two: the clan they were born to and the clan that matters now. The tension between those two names can carry a whole campaign arc.

    Hatchlings, nicknames, and honor

Two more details worth stealing from canon. Dragonborn often refer to a clutch order, so an eldest hatchling carries quiet seniority among siblings. And the childhood nickname a dragonborn earns from clutchmates, usually something embarrassing and accurate, stays private for life. Letting another player character learn that nickname is one of the cheapest, best bonding beats a dragonborn campaign can have.

Sample names from this generator's dragonborn list: Arjhan, Balasar, Akra, Biri, with clan or family names like Delmirev and Kerrhylon. Roll above for the full range, and click any result to copy it.
