How drow names work in 5e

Drow names carry the politics of the Underdark in every syllable. A dark elf bears a personal name plus a house name, and the house name decides how doors open. The great noble houses of cities like Menzoberranzan guard their names jealously, and a drow introducing themselves leads with rank when they have it. Matriarchs sit at the top of the order, so the most feared names in any drow city belong to women, which is worth remembering when you name a priestess of Lolth.

    The sound of the Underdark

Drow names flow where dwarven names crunch. They favor liquid sounds, doubled letters, and an elegant, slightly venomous music: Pharaun, Quenthel, Zaknafein. Personal names often end in -ra, -yn, -ice, or -ath, and house names tend to compound into meanings like 'daughters of the dark' in the drow tongue. The generator above follows those patterns, and the famous canon names you may recognize sit alongside original ones built the same way.

    Surface drow and broken names

A drow who leaves the Underdark has a naming decision to make. Some keep the house name as defiance, some drop it to escape its reputation, and some carry a house name that no longer exists because their house was erased in a coup. A ranger raised on the surface might soften their birth name to sound more elvish, then flinch when another drow pronounces it correctly. Roll a full name above, then decide which half your character kept.

Forms of address that sell the culture

If you DM drow characters, titles do half the work. A ruling priestess is Matron Mother, never just her name. Males of a noble house attach the house name like a leash, and commoners with no house name at all are addressed by trade or by nothing. Sprinkle those forms around one rolled name and an entire city's pecking order walks into the scene with it.

Sample names from this generator's drow list: Alak, Berg'inyon, Akordia, Alauniira, with clan or family names like Aleval and Baenre. Roll above for the full range, and click any result to copy it.
